Princess Charlotte, happy birthday! View the adorable pictures of the expanding royal family
It will only take Princess Charlotte a year to become a double digit royal! The child royal, who is Princess Kate’s and Prince William’s kid, turns nine on May 2. On Thursday, the Prince and Princess of Wales honoured Charlotte’s birthday by posting a picture of her on their official Instagram page.
Charlotte was leaning against a flower-covered fence, dressed in a blue denim skirt, blue tights and a red cardigan over a blue jumper. The 9-year-old smiled broadly as she stood in front of the camera to pose for her mother.
“Happy 9th Birthday, Princess Charlotte! 🎂Thank you for all of the kind messages today,” the caption read, giving the Princess of Wales photo credit.
Following King Charles III’s coronation, Charlotte’s father, Prince William, is first in line for the throne, followed by her younger brother, Prince Louis, who is six, and her older brother, Prince George, who is ten. Charlotte has become more visible in the royal spotlight as she has aged. She created a fashion statement in May at the coronation of her grandpa, King Charles III, by donning an ivory silk crepe Alexander McQueen dress and cape embroidered with ivory satin stitch, featuring motifs of roses, thistles, daffodils and shamrocks. She completed the ensemble with a sparkling Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen headpiece.
The princess enjoys football just as much as her father does. Charlotte and William used X in July 2022 to wish luck to the England women’s national football team, also known as the Lionesses, before of their game versus Germany in the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 competition. Charlotte, dressed in a navy blue top with polka dots, sat next to her father and gave the squad lovely encouragement. “Best of luck to you. I wish you luck,” she uttered.

The British royal family is experiencing two health crises during the princess’s birthday. It was disclosed in February that her grandfather, King Charles III, had undergone therapy for a “benign prostate enlargement” before being diagnosed with an unidentified type of cancer. In the meantime, Princess Kate, Charlotte’s mother, revealed in March that she had been diagnosed with cancer following “major abdominal surgery.”
